Every Claude Update in October 2026: 11 Updates Tested, and Which Ones Are Free
It's Sunday night. Your weekly update is due at nine tomorrow, and all you've got is a messy spreadsheet, fourteen sticky notes and a voice memo you recorded in the car. This month, Anthropic shipped 11 Claude updates that each take a piece of that job off your hands, and five of them work on the free plan.
We gave the same messy week to every update we could, with a stopwatch running. The doc took about 25 seconds and the deck about 50, so two updates turned the whole Sunday into roughly 75 seconds. For each update below we cover three things: where to click, which plan you need, and how much of your limit it used.
You don't need to code
None of this needs a terminal or any setup. Everything happens in the normal Claude app, on the web, desktop or phone.

1. Docs, Slides and Design are now free
Docs, Slides and Design are out of beta and on every plan, including free. Anthropic says people have already made over 45 million of them. We dropped in the spreadsheet, our sticky notes typed up and the voice memo as text, and asked for a one-page update and a five-slide deck.
The part that matters: it read our notes like a person would. The kids bottle dropped 43%, and it wrote that this was because we were out of stock, not because demand dropped. It even left out the sticky notes we hadn't confirmed and listed them as "to check".
Where: just ask in any chat, there's no button to find. Limit used: Claude's usage screen put all our chats this week at 0%.
Pro tip: don't say "make it look nice". Say who's in the room. We said "my boss only reads the titles", so every slide title carries the whole message.
2. Exports that keep their looks, plus phone editing
This came in the same update, and it's the one we care about most. PowerPoint and PDF downloads now come out the way they look in Claude, and a deck can go straight into Google Slides as a file you can edit. If someone else will open it, pick PowerPoint with basic fonts: that version works on any computer. Anthropic also says you can now fix a slide on your phone.
3. Claude Design moves into chat (Dec 14 deadline)
Claude Design now works inside every normal chat. The old separate site closes on December 14. Your designs can move over, but your chats and comments there don't. If you used it, save what you need before then.
4. Dashboards
Dashboards are in beta on paid plans. You ask a question in plain English, and Claude builds a dashboard that stays up to date as your data changes. Anthropic's headline feature: click any number and Claude tells you where it came from.
Plan: Pro and up, not free. On Enterprise, your admin has to switch it on first. Ours took about 1 minute 50 seconds, and usage still read 0% of the week.
Honest note: on our spreadsheet, clicking a number did nothing. Click-to-explain and the live refresh work when the dashboard is connected to business tools like Salesforce or BigQuery. With a plain file, Claude told us straight: the numbers are fixed to your file, so next week, upload the new one.
5. Claude inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
If you live in Google, Claude now sits inside Docs, Sheets and Slides as a sidebar, in beta on paid plans. Install it once from the Google Workspace Marketplace, then open any file and choose Extensions, then Claude. Ask it to fix a formula or rewrite a paragraph, and it edits the file in place. It only works on the file you have open. If your work account doesn't show it, that's your company's Google admin, not Anthropic.
6. Motion: animated explainers
Type /motion and Claude turns your text and charts into a short animated explainer you can download as a video. It's not AI video. Claude writes the animation as code, so you can change any word, number or timing afterwards. The catch: right now it's only on Team and Enterprise plans, in beta. The clip in the video is Anthropic's own demo, because we don't have that plan.
Halfway point: three of the first six work on the free plan.
7. Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5: which to pick
Two new models. Sonnet 5.5 is the fast everyday one. Haiku 5.5 is the cheapest and fastest model Anthropic has made. Opus is still the thinker. On the free plan you get Sonnet and Haiku; Opus needs Pro or above. A simple rule: for short, quick jobs any model is fine, for most of your workday use Sonnet, and for a decision you'd lose sleep over, use Opus.
8. Free monthly API credits (claim them)
If you're on Max, Ultra or Team, you now get monthly credits for the Claude platform, the thing apps and automations run on. Max gets $100 a month, Ultra gets $200 a month. They're not automatic. Go to Settings, then Billing, and link your account. Ours is linked at $200 a month, with the next credit on November 16.
9. Claude Duet: the Claude that messages you first
Duet is a separate app. Instead of waiting for you, it checks your connected apps every few hours and messages you only when something needs you. Anthropic's testers had it catch a showing booked on the wrong day and a call that clashed with a flight. Before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything, it shows you and waits for a yes, and it won't move money between accounts even if you say yes.
It's a waitlist, starting with Pro and Max in the US. Anthropic says it's weaker at personal errands like booking tickets and uses your limits faster than normal chats. We're not in the preview, so the video shows it as an illustration.
10. One chat that runs your other chats
In the desktop app, one chat can now look across all your other chats, tell you which ones are waiting on you, and start new ones. We tested it on 25 chats, and our weekly limit went from 51% to 51%. The full master chat test is its own post.
11. Your skills now travel
Skills are saved instructions that teach Claude how you like things done. On October 22, Anthropic gave the skills format to an open foundation. Anthropic says more than 70 apps already read them, including ChatGPT, Cursor and GitHub Copilot. So the skills you make aren't locked to Claude.
The biggest news wasn't a feature
On October 26, Anthropic filed to become a public company. Nothing in the app changed, but it explains why three of these landed on free. Monthly plans brought in $3.2 billion in the first half of this year, up from $180 million a year earlier.
Free vs paid: the final scoreboard
On the free plan: five of eleven. Docs, Slides and Design, the exports, the Design move, Sonnet and Haiku, and skills. Everything else needs a paid plan, and Motion needs a work plan. Our whole Sunday job took under three minutes and 0% of the week. Plan details are on claude.com/pricing.
Can't find it? The 4 reasons
- Your plan. Motion is Team and Enterprise, Dashboards are paid.
- It's a beta. Betas roll out over days, so refresh tomorrow.
- A work account. Your company admin can switch things off, and the Google add-on needs your Google admin too.
- A waitlist or a country. Duet is a waitlist, starting in the US.
On the desktop app, also check for updates from the Claude menu.
3 mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until December 15 to save your Claude Design chats. They're gone by then.
- Expecting a dashboard made from a file to update itself. It won't. Upload next week's file, or connect the real source.
- Leaving your API credits unclaimed on Max or Team, every month.

Quick answers
Which Claude updates from October 2026 are free?
Five of the eleven work on the free plan: Docs, Slides and Design, the better exports, Claude Design moving into chat, the Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 models, and skills. Everything else needs a paid plan, and Motion needs a Team or Enterprise plan.
Why don't I see the new Claude features?
There are four usual reasons. Your plan may not include it (Motion is Team and Enterprise, Dashboards are paid). It may be a beta that rolls out over days, so refresh tomorrow. A work account admin may have switched it off. Or it's a waitlist or country limit, like Duet. On the desktop app, also check for updates, because many people were just on an old version.
Do the new Claude features use up my usage limit?
Barely, in our test. After making a doc, a five-slide deck and a dashboard, Claude's usage screen still showed chats at 0% of the week. Anthropic does say the new Duet app uses limits faster than normal chats, because it keeps checking in the background.
When does the old Claude Design site close?
The separate Claude Design site closes on December 14. Your designs can move over to chat, but your chats and comments on the old site don't, so save anything you need before then.
How do I claim the free Claude API credits?
If you're on Max, Ultra or Team, go to Settings, then Billing, and link your account. Max gets $100 a month and Ultra gets $200 a month. The credits are not automatic, so if you don't claim them, you don't get them.
What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a separate app that checks your connected apps every few hours and messages you only when something needs you. It asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything, and it won't move money between accounts. It's a waitlist, starting with Pro and Max users in the US.
