12 Free AI Certificates to Get Before 2027, in the Order That Makes Each One Easier

Harvard charges $299 for a certificate in its AI course. On Harvard's own course site, the CS50 certificate for the same course is free. That gap is the whole story here: twelve of the biggest names in tech and education will give you an AI certificate right now, and every one of them costs zero dollars.

We call it the $0 Transcript: twelve certificates, in the order that makes each one easier than the last. We checked every "free" claim on the provider's own page on October 29, 2026, and we earned the first one ourselves. Your first one can be on your profile tonight.

One thing to say up front. Badges and course certificates show you completed a course. They aren't paid professional certifications, and OpenAI says this about its own badges. Offers also change, so check each link before you start.

Lines 1 to 7 are for everyday users and need no code. Lines 8 to 12 are for builders.

Lane 1: using AI (no code)

1. Google: Introduction to Generative AI

On Google Skills. Forty-five minutes. You watch a few short videos, you take a quiz, and a Google badge goes on your profile. It explains what generative AI is (AI that makes new text, images or code) and how it's different from the older kind of machine learning. When we took it, it didn't cost a single credit. Everybody starts here, because it's the fastest win on the list.

2. OpenAI Academy: AI Foundations

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has fourteen free courses now. Start with AI Foundations, about an hour. Any ChatGPT account works, even the free one. It ends with a quiz, and if you score 80% or more, you get a badge you can share. Finish a whole track and they add a certificate of completion. OpenAI is clear that these are badges, not its official certification, which is only open to a few employers so far. For learning to use ChatGPT properly at work, this is the best hour on the list.

3. Anthropic: Claude 101

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, runs twenty-seven free courses. For now you only need Claude 101: thirteen lessons, about two and a half hours, and the button on the page literally says "Register | FREE." You learn how to have a good first conversation with Claude, how to fix a prompt when the answer misses, and how to connect Claude to your files and apps.

4. LinkedIn × Microsoft: Career Essentials in Generative AI (finish by Nov 16)

This is the one with a clock on it. Career Essentials in Generative AI is five short courses, about four hours, then a final exam. Pass it and you get a Professional Certificate that shows up right on your LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn's hub page says all of these courses are free through 2027.

But read the note on the path. It gets updated on Monday, November 16, 2026. If you haven't finished by then, more courses may be required. So this is the one to do this week.

That's four, and every one of them has been about using AI. The next three teach you how it actually works.

5. IBM SkillsBuild: Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals

IBM calls it one hundred percent free, and the badge is issued on Credly, the same badge site Cisco and Amazon use. You cover how AI understands language and images, how machine learning works, AI ethics, and how a model gets run in IBM Watson Studio. It's for adults, eighteen and over.

6. Cisco: Introduction to Modern AI

From Cisco Networking Academy. Six hours, made for beginners, and the page says free right on it. Almost a million people have enrolled. It's practical: how chatbots work, how to write prompts that get better answers, and how to use AI in daily life and at work. Pass the final exam and Cisco gives you a badge.

7. University of Helsinki: Elements of AI

Elements of AI has six chapters, no code at all, and the certificate is free of charge. You can add it to LinkedIn. One thing to know before you start: some of your answers are graded by other students, and that can take a few weeks. So start this one now, even if you finish the others first. And take Part I only. Part II charges 50 euros for its certificate.

Lane 2: building with AI

That's seven certificates, and none of them asked you to write a single line of code. If you want to build with AI, keep going. The next five get more hands-on, and the last one is Harvard.

8. AWS Educate: Introduction to Generative AI

AWS Educate is completely free, no credit card needed. Take Introduction to Generative AI, pass the assessment at the end, and you get an AWS training badge on Credly. If your work touches the cloud (renting computers and storage from Amazon instead of owning them), this is the name people know.

9. Databricks: Generative AI Fundamentals

Lots of big companies keep their data on Databricks. Generative AI Fundamentals takes about an hour. Pass a short quiz and you get an official badge for LinkedIn. Then take AI Agent Fundamentals, ninety minutes, same deal. If you work with reports and data all day, this pair is worth more than it looks.

10. Kaggle: Intro to Machine Learning

Kaggle is owned by Google. Intro to Machine Learning is seven lessons, about three hours. This is where you start writing Python, but it all runs in your browser, so there's nothing to install. No cost, like every Kaggle course, and you get a certificate at the end. You'll build your first real model, then test how good it is.

11. Hugging Face: AI Agents Course

Hugging Face is where most of the world's open AI models live. The AI Agents course asks for three to four hours a week for about five weeks. Finish unit one and you get a fundamentals certificate. Finish the whole course and you get the full one. In their words, the certification process is completely free, and there's no deadline. This is where you build an agent: an AI that does tasks for you, step by step.

12. Harvard: CS50's Introduction to AI with Python

Taught by David Malan and Brian Yu. Seven weeks: search, knowledge, uncertainty, optimization, learning, neural networks and language. This is the real thing. You write the code for every project yourself. Score at least 70% on each project, not as an average but on every one, and you get the free CS50 Certificate, signed by David Malan. Harvard's edX page charges $299 for a certificate in the same course. Take it last, because the eleven before it make it a lot easier. Start at cs50.harvard.edu/ai.

What not to pay for yet

You'll see a lot of paid options next to these. None of them are needed to fill your transcript:

  • Google AI Essentials: $49 a month.
  • DeepLearning.AI certificates: $25 a month and up.
  • AWS AI Practitioner exam: $100.
  • Microsoft AI-901 exam: $99.
  • Anthropic's architect exam: $125.

Those official exams can come later, once your transcript is full. The twelve above cost nothing.

We earned line 1 ourselves

We said we'd earn one of these on camera, so here it is: line 1, Google's Introduction to Generative AI, from our own run in August 2026. The lesson, then the quiz, where you need 75% to pass. Our score was 100%, and the completion badge appeared right after. Under an hour, start to finish.

Quick answers

Is the Harvard CS50 AI certificate really free?

Yes, on Harvard's own course site. If you score at least 70% on each project in CS50's Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python, you get the free CS50 Certificate. Harvard's edX page sells a separate verified certificate for the same course for $299. You don't need that one.

Which free AI certificate should I take first?

Google's Introduction to Generative AI on Google Skills. It takes about 45 minutes: a few short videos, a quiz you need 75% to pass, and a badge on your profile. We took it ourselves, scored 100%, and finished in under an hour.

Is the LinkedIn and Microsoft generative AI certificate still free?

Yes. LinkedIn says all the courses on its hub are free through 2027. Career Essentials in Generative AI is five short courses, about four hours, then a final exam. The path gets updated on Monday, November 16, 2026, and if you haven't finished by then, more courses may be added.

Are free AI badges the same as a professional certification?

No. Badges and course certificates show you completed a course. OpenAI says this about its own Academy badges: they are not its official certification. Paid exams like AWS AI Practitioner ($100) or Microsoft AI-901 ($99) are a different thing, and they can come later.

Do I need to know how to code for these AI certificates?

Not for the first seven. Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, LinkedIn and Microsoft, IBM, Cisco and Elements of AI need no code at all. Coding starts at Kaggle, where Python runs in your browser, and Harvard CS50 AI has you write the code for every project yourself.

Is Elements of AI free?

Part one, Introduction to AI from the University of Helsinki, is free, including the certificate, and you can add it to LinkedIn. It has six chapters and no code. Some answers are graded by other students, which can take a few weeks. Part two charges 50 euros for its certificate.
