7 Things Claude Code Masters Never Do — and the One-Line Fix for Each
The one-page companion to the video. The people who mastered Claude Code barely do anything — no wall of instructions, no frantic re-typing, no hovering over every line. The difference isn't a secret command; it's a short list of things they refuse to do. This checklist is that list, and for each of the 7 you get THE TRAP (the habit almost everyone has), THE MASTER MOVE (the one-line change that replaces it), and a STEAL-THIS PROMPT you paste verbatim. THE 7 NEVERS: (1) NEVER write the mega-prompt — give the goal and one constraint, then stop and let Claude ask. (2) NEVER start cold — teach it once with CLAUDE.md, memory and skills, so it wakes up already knowing your codebase. (3) NEVER trust the first answer — make it run, test, and prove it with a green result. (4) NEVER dump the whole codebase — point at the 2-3 files that matter and name the function. (5) NEVER give an unbounded task — use plan mode and go one small, undo-able step at a time. (6) NEVER micromanage the keystrokes — set the guardrails once (permissions, plan mode for risky), then let it run. (7) NEVER chase the newest model for everything — match the model to the job, cheap-and-fast for mechanical work, top model for the hard reasoning. THE PATTERN: every one is a subtraction. The amateur adds; the master removes. This is an independent best-practices guide, not an official Anthropic product.
