The Portable Plugin Kit — Build One AI Agent Plugin and Run It in Claude Code AND Codex (Full Source + Every Command)

The companion kit to the launch-day video. On Aug 6, 2026, OpenAI — with Amazon, Microsoft, Cursor, and Vercel — launched Agent Plugins v1.0.0: one open packaging format for AI-agent extensions, live day one in Codex, ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, VS Code, and Kiro. The twist: it packages Agent Skills and MCP — both invented at Anthropic — in a folder layout that mirrors Claude Code's plugin format, and Anthropic isn't on the committee. We built a real plugin (sidekick: a standup skill, a commit-message skill, and a 55-line dependency-free MCP notes server), validated it against the official 1.0.0 schemas, and installed the SAME folder into Claude Code 2.1.223 and Codex 0.146.1 on camera. INSIDE: (1) the 3-file anatomy of the standard in plain English, (2) the complete sidekick source — every file verbatim, ready to copy, (3) the exact install commands for both CLIs, (4) the one-line Codex MCP workaround and the 8-line Claude shim that make one folder work everywhere today, (5) a make-your-own-in-10-minutes checklist, (6) honest day-one caveats. Independent kit from Hyperautomation Labs — not affiliated with OpenAI or Anthropic.
