What the 'Free AI Degree' Brochure Won't Tell You
The honest companion to the video — a critical, cited review of Anthropic Academy's free 'AI degree' (roughly 18–20 courses, several of them audience re-skins of one AI Fluency framework). Not a catalog: the real difficulties. THE 6 HONEST DIFFICULTIES: (1) the prerequisite cliff — 'no formal prerequisites' on the API + both MCP courses actually assumes you already write Python, with no bridge from the no-code tracks; (2) debugging AI mistakes isn't taught — the courses teach the happy path, not how to reproduce and triage a model that's confidently wrong; (3) the hidden time tax — content hours are not competence hours, so plan 2–3× the runtime once you count setup, breakage and the labs; (4) workflow reality — real agents and MCP break in ways a 2-hour lesson can't cover (engineer Armin Ronacher: 'SDK abstractions break once you hit real tool use'); (5) context management — bigger windows aren't smarter (Chroma's 'context rot' research: accuracy drops as input grows, over 30% loss when key facts sit mid-prompt, a 200K window can fail around 50K), and Anthropic itself calls context 'a precious, finite resource'; (6) production pitfalls — cost (a single feature can eat a $250K/month bill), latency (over 2–3s and users leave), plus evals and security that get almost no airtime.
