The DeepSeek Stack Playbook — the One-Command Install of the Free Open-Source Agent, the Exact Settings Block, My 6-Run Test Receipts, and the August-16 Price Clock

DeepSeek shipped a free, MIT-licensed, Claude-Code-class agent (Harness) and the official V4 Pro model in the same 24 hours — and this playbook is everything I verified installing and testing the whole stack on camera, day one. PAGE 2 — THE 10-MINUTE INSTALL: the one command (npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web), what a workspace and permission mode are, both model routes — the DeepSeek-account route AND the exact settings.yaml OpenRouter block I used with no DeepSeek account at all — plus the day-one boot gotcha and its one-line fix. PAGE 3 — THE RECEIPTS: six runs, six passes, all machine-graded. The billing-bug fix (14/14 tests, zero tests touched): flagship $0.049 in 93 seconds, the cheap Flash model $0.0074 in 32 seconds — same fix. The 6-document order extraction: Flash 6/6 fully exact and more faithful to the source than the flagship. The build-from-spec report: exact match both. Totals: Pro $0.114, Flash $0.018 — which buys you the rule: default to Flash, reach for Pro only when Flash fails you. With the honest-limits box: these are small single-workspace jobs, not a week inside a 100-file repo. PAGE 4 — THE PRICE CLOCK: on August 16 at 16:00 UTC the whole V4 family moves to peak/off-peak billing, and even off-peak is roughly 2.3× today's flat rate — the full official table (Flash output $0.28 → $0.66 off-peak / $1.32 peak; Pro $0.87 → $1.98 / $3.96), the peak windows translated to US East, US West, and India time, the off-peak rule that halves every heavy run, and the perspective line: my whole battery would still cost under a dime at the worst peak rate.
